When I photograph newborns, I also get to observe the new parents. I get to bear witness to the chaos, the exhaustion, but more importantly, to this new overwhelmingly joyous love they have for this new little baby that is theirs and theirs alone. Such a giant love for someone so tiny. I get to watch dads gently cradle their babies in their arms and try to soothe them, and there’s this peace that comes over everyone when that baby sighs into sleep. I get to watch moms as they scramble for bottles and burp cloths, as they coo and cuddle and coax little smiles out. Parents who just weeks before had no idea what was coming. Had no idea that even though they knew it was going to be tough and knew it was going to be amazing, they were only grasping a fraction of the wholeness of it all. When I visited Rob & Hannah to photograph their new baby, all of that was on display. The gentle wonder. The fierce love. The unwavering connection between parents and child. And just look at this little one – all wide-eyed and alert, ready to greet the day and whatever this big beautiful world has in store.
